If You Find This Insect in Your Home

Creepy Bathroom Crawlers: Silverfish Explained

You’re brushing your teeth and spot a shiny, wiggly bug — a silverfish.

These ancient, wingless insects have been around for millions of years.

About 1½ inches long, silvery, and fast-moving,

they don’t bite or spread disease, but they can cause real damage to your home.

Why They’re in Your Home

Silverfish love humidity, darkness, and starchy materials like paper, glue, and fabric.

“They’ll eat wallpaper glue, the bindings of your favorite book, old newspapers, and dandruff (yes, really).”

How to Get Rid of Them

Dry out damp areas with ventilation or a dehumidifier, clear clutter, and seal cracks.

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth or boric acid (carefully) as natural repellents.

If they keep appearing, “call the pros for pest control.”

Keep Them Gone

Store paper and clothes in plastic, use moisture absorbers, and keep your home clean and dry.

If it’s “dry and boring, silverfish will leave.”
