That quiet tap on your taillight is often the officer’s first line of protection and proof. By touching the car, they can leave a fingerprint or DNA trace, creating physical evidence that the interaction took place in case the driver flees, a complaint is filed, or something goes terribly wrong. Before body cameras and dash cams, that small touch could be the only record tying the officer to that exact vehicle at that exact moment.
