Tragic Loss at the U.S. Air Force Academy

1. Sudden Loss

Cadet Avery Koonce, 19, began her journey at the U.S. Air Force Academy full of “discipline, purpose, intelligence, and a sense of service.”

In September 2024, she was found unresponsive in her dorm room.

Despite first responders’ efforts, Avery passed away, leaving the Academy community in shock. Lt. Gen.

Tony Bauernfeind emphasized supporting her family and guiding the Academy through grief.

2. Medical Cause

The El Paso County Coroner confirmed she died from Paeniclostridium sordellii sepsis, a rare bacterial infection that overwhelmed her system.

Those close to her recalled her persistent cough, which masked the hidden danger.

3. Life and Legacy

From Thrall High School in Texas to the Academy, Avery was “extraordinary,” excelling in academics, track and field, and leadership.

She planned to major in biology and minor in kinesiology, reflecting her love of science and movement.

4. Remembrance

Friends, teammates, and mentors remember her calm determination and kindness.

Her track coach said she ran “as if she had wind beneath her feet.”

Avery’s life, though brief, left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
