Raul Malo, the lead singer and co-founder of the Grammy-winning, Latin-influenced country band the Mavericks, passed away on Monday at the age of 60. A representative for the band confirmed Malo\u2019s death to Rolling Stone, stating that he had been battling cancer.<\/p>\n
Malo was the frontman of the Mavericks, a vibrant band from Miami known for blending country, Latin, and rockabilly influences.<\/p>\n
The Mavericks have appeared on the American Billboard Hot Country Songs charts 15 times. Their biggest hit on the chart is \u201cAll You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,\u201d a collaboration with accordionist Flaco Jim\u00e9nez, which climbed to number 13 in 1996.<\/p>\n

Renowned for his powerful and emotive voice, Malo was affectionately called \u201cEl Maestro\u201d by fans and bandmates. As one fan shared on social media: \u201cI realize that Raul\u2019s voice, talent and integrity make it nearly impossible for him to perform any song at any level but excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n
His performances could leave audiences stunned into silence or cheering wildly, and with his co-founders \u2014 bassist Robert Reynolds and drummer Paul Deakin \u2014 the Mavericks earned a reputation as one of the most versatile live acts.<\/p>\n
Cancer diagnosis
\nSadly, Malo was diagnosed with colon cancer in June 2024. He later underwent surgery to remove a liver tumor, followed by another operation on his colon.<\/p>\n
By September 2025, he revealed he was also fighting LMD, or leptomeningeal disease, a rare form of cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n
Malo was born on August 7, 1965, in Miami to Cuban parents who fled their homeland. The golden-voiced singer often spoke about his family\u2019s journey to the U.S. as a pursuit of the American dream.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey came here to pursue the American dream \u2014 the promise that here in this country, you won\u2019t be persecuted for your religious beliefs, skin color or ethnicity,\u201d he told Rolling Stone in 2017.<\/p>\n
Solo career
\nAfter internal tensions and exhausting tours, the Mavericks broke up in 1999. Malo then launched a solo career, releasing his debut album Today in 2001. The band would later reunite, and Malo\u2019s voice only became more remarkable with time.<\/p>\n
Even amid his solo work, the Mavericks remained Malo\u2019s core focus. In 2024, he revisited older, unrecorded material for Moon & Stars, the band\u2019s 13th and final studio album.<\/p>\n
\u201cI went to the storage unit and opened the bin and it was like Raiders of the Lost Ark: hard drives, tapes, notebooks, DAT tapes, whatever we were recording on,\u201d Malo recalled.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho\u2019s gonna believe that the years will not be kind? You\u2019ve got a full head of hair. Your goatee is not gray. I realized why it never got recorded. But now, I can baritone that shit and it sounds real.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cancelled tour
\nIn September 2025, Malo announced that the Mavericks would cancel the rest of their tour due to his cancer battle. \u201cThings have taken a turn,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
Malo died of cancer on December 8, 2025.<\/p>\n
