Eric Dane was set to return to the spotlight at the 2025 Emmy Awards, joining his Grey\u2019s Anatomy castmates for a highly anticipated reunion. But when the moment arrived, \u201cMcSteamy\u201d was missing from the stage as the effects of his \u201cnasty disease\u201d sidelined him and landed him in hospital.<\/p>\n

For years, Eric Dane captivated audiences as Dr. Mark Sloan \u2013 the irresistibly charming \u201cMcSteamy\u201d \u2013 on Grey\u2019s Anatomy, later earning critical acclaim for his role in HBO\u2019s Euphoria.<\/p>\n

But in April 2025, the 52-year-old actor revealed he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the progressive and incurable neurological disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been diagnosed with ALS,\u201d he told People at the time, expressing gratitude for his wife Rebecca Gayheart and their daughters, Billie and Georgia. \u201cI am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next\u2026I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

ALS
\nOver time, ALS robs patients of the ability to walk, speak, and even breathe independently.<\/p>\n

According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS is a \u201cnervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS causes loss of muscle control. The disease gets worse over time\u2026There is no cure for this fatal disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

While survival time varies, the disease has claimed the lives of Lou Gehrig \u2013 the legendary baseball player who died in 1941 \u2013 SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg, and Bryan Randall, partner of actress Sandra Bullock.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous people to live with the disease was physicist Stephen Hawking, who survived for decades before passing away in 2018.<\/p>\n

Mobility loss
\nOnly one month after he announced he had ALS, Dane spoke with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, candidly describing how quickly the progressive degenerative disease was taking away mobility in his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I\u2019d been texting too much, or my hand was fatigued, but a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse,\u201d he explained. \u201cMy dominant side. My left side is functioning; my right side has completely stopped working. It\u2019s going. I feel like maybe a couple, few more months, and I won\u2019t have my left hand either. It\u2019s sobering.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will never forget those three letters,\u201d Dane said. \u201cIt\u2019s on me the second I wake up. It\u2019s not a dream\u2026I don\u2019t think this is the end of my story. I don\u2019t feel like this is the end of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Ride this \u2018till the wheels fall off\u2019
\nAlso in June, he spoke with E! News and expressed his willpower to keep moving forward with doing everything he loves, despite the quick progression.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to ride this \u2018till the wheels fall off,\u201d the actor said. \u201cIt keeps me sharp. It keeps me moving forward, which is super important right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel great when I\u2019m at work. Of course, there have been some sort of setbacks, but I feel pretty good. My spirit is always pretty buoyant, so at the end of the day, that\u2019s all that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Nasty disease\u2019
\nBut the emotional toll of ALS became painfully clear when ALS prevented him doing something he was \u201creally looking forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane had been scheduled to present at the 2025 Emmy Awards in mid-September alongside his former Grey\u2019s Anatomy co-star Jesse Williams, as part of a special tribute marking the show\u2019s 20th anniversary \u2013 but he was forced to miss the ceremony.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Washington Post, Dane revealed that shortly before the Emmys, he lost his balance \u2013 a debilitating effect of ALS \u2013 and fell hard in his kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cALS is a nasty disease\u2026So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head,\u201d Dane told the Post. \u201cI missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to. It would have been great to see Jesse and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues I thought would have been a special moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I was really upset about it, but you know, there was nothing I could do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Gonna go out helping somebody\u2019
\nDespite his decline, Dane continues advocating for more research and support for neurodegenerative diseases. He hopes his experience can offer comfort to others and wants the attention on his battle to serve a greater purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something I felt compelled to share with people,\u201d Dane told the Post. \u201cThis is more of a: \u2018How can I help? How can I be of some service?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cNot to be overly morbid, but you know, if I\u2019m going out, I\u2019m gonna go out helping somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

For fans who adored him as McSteamy, Dane\u2019s resilience in the face of a \u201cnasty disease\u201d is both heartbreaking and inspiring \u2013 a reminder of how fragile life can be, even for the brightest stars.<\/p>\n
